GOLF ASSOCIATION AND STUDENTS THANK ROY JAY

Portland business icon, Roy Jay served as Master Of Ceremonies for Leisure Hour Golf Club annual dinner and awards ceremonies held last Saturday evening at Holiday Inn at Portland Airport. Jay is president of the African American Chamber of Commerce and was instrumental in helping the Western States Golf Association secure a five figure grant for their organizations regional events which will be held in Portland for three consecutive years. According to Keith Edwards, LHGC Chair Emeritus, this is the first time in the history of the association that they have ever received a grant.

golf2One of the missions of the Leisure Hour Golf Club is to not only empower more people of color to be involved in golf, but also to raise money for scholarships. This year was no different. Three well deserving local students received scholarships from the organization.  Near the end of the event, Jay asked all three students to return to the stage for a surprise that even Leisure Hour officials were not aware of.  Jay provided the three well deserving student with an additional “personal scholarship” which will enable them to get off to a good start in the fall.  Some scholarship programs award the money directly to the college. In this case, Jay made it clear that these young people will be getting the checks direct to them to help with much of their out of pocket expenses.
